History and vision

The history of BWT goes back to 1823, when Johann Adam Benckiser founded his chemical factory in Germany. The modern BWT was “born” in 1990, when Andreas Weißenbacher took over the company through a management buyout. The name “Benckiser Wasser Technik” was shortened to “BWT”, marking the beginning of an impressive success story. The headquarters moved from Hallein to Mondsee in Austria in 1992, and today BWT is one of the world’s leading water technology companies.

BWT’s vision is crystal clear: to become number one in water technology by offering products and processes that are both environmentally friendly and economically sound. The company invests in research and innovation every day to improve its technologies, always with the aim of delivering systems and solutions that protect both people and the planet.

World-class technology and innovation

BWT continuously conducts research across all areas of water treatment at its innovation centres. This includes filtration methods, filter media, ion-exchange systems for demineralisation, softening and decarbonisation, membrane technologies (micro-, ultra-, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis), pure steam generators, distillation systems, UV systems, ozone generators and more.

The result is world-class water technology that delivers the highest-quality water exactly where it is needed. Softening systems remove hardness and protect equipment from limescale build-up, extending lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.

Reverse osmosis and desalination systems ensure that water is clean and free from unwanted minerals and impurities. Filter cartridges maintain consistently high water quality and must be replaced regularly to ensure optimal performance.

BWT products are commonly used in professional kitchens, restaurants, cafés, hotels and industrial environments worldwide. They not only improve water quality – they also make a noticeable difference to the taste of coffee, tea and food, as well as hygiene across the entire water system.

Certified quality and sustainability

BWT is certified according to ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14000 (environmental management), ISO 50001 (energy management) and ISO 45001 (occupational safety). These certifications underline the company’s commitment to top-tier standards.

The motto “For You and Planet Blue” reflects BWT’s mission: to act responsibly and sustainably while meeting the needs of both individuals and the planet. “For You” places people at the centre – customers, partners and employees. “For Planet Blue” highlights the essential role water plays in our world, and BWT’s responsibility in treating and preserving this scarce resource in harmony with nature.

FAQ

What is the difference between a softening system and a reverse osmosis unit?
A softening system primarily removes calcium and magnesium (limescale) through ion exchange, resulting in softer water and reduced scale build-up. A reverse osmosis unit filters water through a membrane and removes far more impurities, including minerals, salts and microorganisms, producing exceptionally pure water.

How often should filter cartridges be replaced?
This depends on water consumption, water quality and the specific filter type. In general, replacement is recommended every 3–12 months. BWT provides guidance for each cartridge. Regular replacement ensures optimal water quality.

Are BWT products environmentally friendly?
Yes. Sustainability is a core part of BWT’s mission “For You and Planet Blue”. The company is certified according to ISO 14000 and ISO 50001, and its products are designed to reduce waste, conserve resources and minimise environmental impact.

How do I know which system I need?
This depends on your water quality and requirements. If you primarily need to remove limescale, a softening system is usually sufficient. For applications requiring very pure water (e.g. specific machinery), a reverse osmosis unit may be the better choice.

Can BWT systems be installed in existing setups?
Yes, BWT offers installation kits that allow their systems to be integrated into existing water setups. However, professional installation is recommended to ensure proper operation.

How do BWT products improve the taste of coffee and tea?
Clean, soft water without limescale or impurities significantly enhances flavour. Minerals and hardness can produce bitter or flat notes, whereas purified water from BWT systems allows natural aromas to shine through.

What do the ISO certifications mean for me as a customer?
They guarantee that BWT complies with international standards for quality, environmental responsibility, energy efficiency and workplace safety. For customers, this means reliable, high-quality products from a company committed to responsible operation.
